If possible, please specify which version of Starlink you are using:

  • Starlink (regular residential) fixed location, $110 per month, $599 up front cost for the modem and dish.
  • Starlink (RV) movable location, $135 per month, $599 for dish and modem or $2,500 for “in motion” hardware.
  • Starlink (Business) $500/mo with a one-time hardware cost of $2,500. Larger dish, higher speeds, much higher cost.

    Better than expected but PRICEY

As you probably know Starlink is a satellite internet service developed by SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk. It uses THOUSANDS of low-earth-orbit satellites to deliver high-speed, low-latency broadband internet to anywhere on the planet. Sounds cool, right? But is it worth it?

I live in the boonies so I decided to give Starlink a try and see for myself. I ordered the Starlink kit for RV plan for $599 and received it in a couple weeks. The kit includes a dish antenna, a tripod stand mount, a Wi-Fi router and some cables. The setup was pretty easy: I just had to find a spot with a clear view of the sky, plug everything in and download the Starlink app on my phone.

The app helped me make sure I had a good spot for the dish and connect to the network. It also showed me some real-time performance data like download speed, latency and uptime. I was impressed by the numbers: I got around 150 Mbps download speed and 20 ms latency on average. That’s way better than my old DSL connection.

I tested Starlink with some of my favorite online activities: streaming Netflix, playing Fortnite, video calling my friends and browsing Reddit. Everything worked smoothly and without any noticeable lag or buffering. I felt like I was living in the future.

But Starlink is not perfect. There are some drawbacks that you should be aware of before you sign up. First of all, Starlink is expensive. Besides the initial cost of the kit, you have to pay ~$99-$145 per month depending on which service you pick and if you are in an over saturated or under saturated area for the service. That’s more than most other internet providers charge. For most users prices have gone up for Starlink and they are also starting to do data caps, both of those policies suck.

Secondly, Starlink is not 100% reliable yet. Sometimes I experienced drops in speed or connectivity due to weather conditions or congestion etc. The app let me see those interruptions and thankfully they were not very frequent . But it was still annoying when I was in the middle of something important.

Thirdly, Starlink may not be not very eco-friendly. Some experts have raised concerns about the environmental impact of launching so many satellites into orbit and creating space debris that could collide with other objects or re-enter Earth’s atmosphere. SpaceX claims that they are taking measures to mitigate these risks but there is no guarantee that they will succeed. And who knows, maybe it is better to put satellites in space than to install a bajillion cell towers on earth. But still something to consider.

So what’s my verdict? Starlink is an innovative and impressive technology that offers fast and accessible internet to anyone who needs it. But it also comes with some trade-offs that may not be worth it for everyone.

If you live in a remote area where other options are limited or nonexistent, then Starlink may be your best bet for getting online. But if you live in an urban area where you have access to cheaper and more stable alternatives, then you will probably want to wait until Starlink improves its service quality and lowers its price.

    Frustrating price increase

It To A Friend?: Yes, but only at the original price

I've only had Starlink for three months and it is frustrating to see Starlink raising their prices from $110 to $120 dollars, especially considering the slow speeds that many customers are experiencing. 🙁

It feels like a slap in the face for those who have been loyal to the service despite its shortcomings. It's important for companies like Starlink to prioritize customer satisfaction and provide reliable service before even considering raising prices. Look at the long run please Starlink.

Hopefully they will listen to feedback and work towards improving their offerings rather than simply increasing costs.

Starlink is raising their prices from $110 to $120 dollars and still not even fixing the busy time slow speeds? Not cool! They don't even care about their customers who have been sticking with them through thick and thin. Starlink, get your act together and start providing some decent always stable service before you go raising prices or this guy is cancelling. SMH.

    Great option for remote work

Overall, Starlink internet is a great option for those who need fast and reliable internet service. It has impressive speeds and is pretty well-suited to both residential and commercial (work at home) applications. The installation process is really easy versus other internet services and the price point makes it competitive compared with other providers in its class (still expensive though). However, there are some drawbacks such as limited availability in certain areas, and higher costs than traditional broadband services. In the end, whether or not Starlink Internet is right for you will depend on your individual needs but this review should give you an idea of what to expect if you decide to go with Starlink. Overall they have been a great help to my work and my family's entertainment.

Awesome technology, needs better customer support

We have "regular Starlink" and we have used our starlink for about 6 months now after a terribly long wait to get service. Since then it has been very reliable and quite fast.

Originally we were getting almost 200mbs downloads and 50mbs uploads. Since then speeds have fluctuated but we generally get at least 50mbs down and 8mbs up. On off peak times we still get highs of 200mbs but not all the time.

    My biggest complaints are:

-poor customer service (we have some friends that had a dish fail and they have been waiting weeks for Starlink to get it taken care of)

-super long waits to get service (I preordered the day it was first announced and it took SO LONG for them to open it up for ordering to me)

    Pros:

+Much better than any other satellite provider (and I have tried just about all of them)

+The hardware works well, including the Ethernet adapter that is option)

+Snow and rain have not been much of an issue

    +The app works pretty well

Overall 4/5 stars and I hope it keeps getting better!
