Incredibly Awful

Aug 16, 2015 by Bobby

Keep in mind - this is only day 3 with them, and it's my LAST!

Installation went well, and it gone straight into the toilet after that. I get on average only 450Kbps, not even 1/20th the speed I signed up for. Spent 2.5 hours on phone with tech support with no solution. Installer came back to check install and it was all good.

Day 2 was just as frustrating. Another couple hours with tech support again, having me do everything I did yesterday. Again it was a total waste of time and there was no solution. They said they are going to send it up to the next level and I can expect a call either that evening or the next day. Well, no call at all from anybody by 3pm so I decided to call and ask for an approximate time because I had to go out and get some running done after sitting home all day. They couldn't do that, I just have to wait. 8pm rolled around just now and still no call. Their internet is unusable, and now I have wasted 3 days with them. I assume they are not going to call either.

If this is how they start out, I can only imagine how bad it will be while I am under contract. THIS IS ONLY MY 3RD DAY and I have no solution to the problem, they are unresponsive, there is virtually no internet to be had, my second request does not seem to yield any result either.

I am cancelling it tonight for breach of contract. I have no service and nobody will talk to me, that is my result after 3 days.
I am taking out their dish, pole, wires, and modem. They can pick it all up at the end of my driveway tomorrow.
What a total waste of time!

NOT ABLE TO CANCEL

Aug 15, 2015 by matt chatell

I spent 2 hours today getting the runaround to cancel my service and attempt to return equipment. I was told first i had to pay early termination fees, and I will not - second I was told that they would send me a return box at the construction site at the end of my billing cycle Sept 10th. I explained no mail can be received at that site. I offered to use my own fedex acct just needed the procedure to return - I was not given it. This firm has a deliberate customer service style that makes it almost impossible to cancel. Of course very accommodating when selling and then no help when their equipment and service is not adequate - STAY AWAY

Extreme frustration

Aug 15, 2015 by Matt Chatell

I made 2 attempts and leased 2 sets of satellite equipment to provide internet to run security cameras, the first issue was i was sold the wrong equipment where a static ip address is needed for my purposes. The second attempt with static ip was to slow for the cameras and Huges tech support told me after the fact that this is a known problem. I have spent hours on the phone, getting wrong numbers, operators who only know the script even the part that I owed an early termination fee. I just spent an hour on the phone again explaining that sending a return box to the construction site was not likely to work and I could send the equipment back at my own expense, they wouldn't give me a address and said i had to wait for the box at the end of my billing cycle - this firm service is far worse than the reputation Comcast has....

Data usage charged before it's used!

Aug 06, 2015 by Marcy Freeby

My data allowance resets on the 2nd of each month. Yesterday (August 5th) at about 3:00pm, I called them to find out when exactly my contract ends. I asked at that time about my usage. I was told that on August 5th between 8pm and 12am my data usage was excessive. I had somehow used over 3GB in that time period. I looked at the clock, and asked the rep who had a very heavy accent to repeat the date and times. My confusion couldn't possibly be that I used data excessively during a time period that hadn't occurred yet. She then told me that it is because they are on EST. Uhm... So am I! Try again. She told me that she could sell me tokens to add to my allowance. I told her, I have just paid you $90 3 days ago... Why should I give you more now?
As stated earlier, I was calling to see about contract ending... Luckily she told me I am out of contract. They can now take this crap equipment and shove it. They promised me speeds of 10mb download... I'm lucky to get 2.5 before my allowance runs out, after that, the meter laughs at me. I really have very few options, but this is the biggest mistake I've ever made. LOL I also tried leaving no stars. No such luck.

DON'T GET IT!!!

Aug 06, 2015 by JESSICA

Got Hughes Net because I live in the country and need satellite internet. The first 5 months my internet was off and on and I would have to have a technician come to my home and fix it (At charge), then it was okay for a while, I do internet conferences so I use a lot of data and it is very expensive to purchase new data. Now only 5 months of having continuous service the internet is down and has been for two days and it could be another day or two. The customer service is not that good. I got stuck in this contract for poor service, bad internet, and extremely high fees. Do not do the same thing!

Feels like 1995

Aug 05, 2015 by Maria

Currently Hughes net is experiencing technical difficulties and my internet is down for at least another day.
This service is a joke. Not a joke that brings a smile to your face, but one that feels like you're trapped in a nightmare of slow internet that you can't awake from. The service is slower than my dial up speeds in 1995.
Unfortunately, living in the mountains, off the grid, this is the only option for internet.
Somehow I use up all my data in the first week, even if no one is home. Then my internet becomes "hard-throttled" until my next month allowance resets.
You can call hughesnet and get a complimentary token to boost your speeds, which lasts about 30 minutes. So I call them about 10 times a day, just to get enough speed to surf craigslist.
YouTube? Forget about it.
If you plan on making money working from home on the internet, you're screwed.
Right now my 1x connection on verizon is much faster than Hughes net.
I've been suckered, and I'm not afraid to admit it.

Reliability

Aug 05, 2015 by Holly G

Reliable...

That's the opposite of Hughesnet. We got hughesnet a few years ago with the hope of a faster, more reliable internet service. Now, having been with Hughesnet for several years I can safely say that dialup is actually a more reliable option.

Where can I begin.

To start out with, if you run over your limited bandwidth, your account is "hard throttled" meaning that anything that is https secured will no longer work and anything else will load at a speed slower than dial up internet. The interesting thing, however, is that even with full bandwidth this happens with Hughesnet multiple times a week. Conveniently it only happens when I'm not doing anything important, just trying to pay bills, apply for loans, or check my bank account. So obviously, this isn't that big of a deal.

Over the past few years that we've had Hughes net, we've had to have them come out to fix problems with their equipment twice. Each experience was met with over 3 hours of hold, several phone calls, and multiple poorly trained customer service representatives, which ended with having to wait for a week or more in order to PAY someone to come and fix their faulty equipment. This is now happening for a third time, conveniently enough while trying to finish up a student loan disclosure that is due two days from now.

It was bad enough to put up with the time outs and satellite outages in the middle of emails, paper submissions, and document viewing, but this time they've gone too far. Their poor customer service, faulty equipment, and outrageous prices for the amount of bandwidth you get is beyond ridiculous.

customer service and Hughes net

Aug 03, 2015 by moser

pretty much all the reviews are true as it was with us customer service is awful call them if you can understand what they're saying they put you on hold forever everyone is seems to be too busy to answer your questions we had Hughes net for two years we canceled we ask that they read take off the satellite off the roof as I cannot physically climb a rope to get it my husband is out of town for several months I was told and uncertain terms that my husband would have to call my husband calls they said absolutely not pay somebody then hung up on him and me awful awful service I rather go without

Absolutely Horrible

Aug 02, 2015 by Devin

This is the worst internet service I have ever used. I can barely load google on my computer and gaming is completely impossible, though I was told the package I bought would allow me to play online. The installer had me sign to "confirm he had been there" which was a lie and I actually was signing a 2 year contract. On top of that, this was after rescheduling 4 times because he would not show up. They very obviously don't care about anything but making money and I tell everyone I know to never use this scam of a company. I sure wish I hasn't.

Limited Options

Jul 23, 2015 by April

Where we live, I'm glad that we have access to internet. I just wish we had other options. We've used HughesNet for several years. I guess I can say the service has been reliable as far as not really ever having any major technical issues. So that's the Pros.
Now for the Cons. We pay around one hundred dollars for 15GB Anytime Usage and we get 20GB for use between the hrs of 2 and 8 a.m. We need download capacity for updates on Apps on our computer, phones and occasionally games and game systems. We also often watch Youtube videos. This month we were completely out of data on day three of our new data cycle. You cannot use HughesNet to download games on gaming systems. We turn off automatic updates for our phones and computer because it depletes our data too quickly. The amount of data that updates require nowadays is just more than HughesNet can or will accommodate.
On more than one occasion data is used up when no one is even on the internet. (Not sure how this happens) We downloaded the Status Meter and it shows the hours data was used when no one was even home.
To summarize HughesNet Gen 4 can be a reliable internet (except of course when its very cloudy or raining) BUT... big BUT here, I would ONLY recommend to someone who does't really update their internet enabled devices OR doesn't really stream online videos and definitely wouldn't recommend for someone who wanted to game online.
I really hope other internet providers will come to our area so I can switch. We are seriously looking into Exede for their unlimited Data for the 12:00 a.m.-5:00 a.m. hours.

1.1 5.0 418 418 Was with Hughesnet for a total of 5 years. First 2 years by contract. Last 3, month to month. When I cancelled the service to go to Starlink, they were unwilling to prorate the Hughesnet Gen4 Satellite Internet
