ViaSat Exede broadband internet Exede is a satellite internet service provided by parent company ViaSat. The service was launched in 2012 when the ViaSat-1 satellite was put into service. Before Exede, ViaSat offered WildBlue on an older Telesat Anik F2 satellite. In general Exede's real world performance is over 10x faster than WildBlue's. The new ViaSat-2 satellite is scheduled to be put into service later this year (2016). SKU UPC Model

Avoid at all costs

I strongly advise against using Exede Internet (ViaSat), or any other satellite provider, unless there is no other viable alternative.

I paid $129.99 per month for their highest level of service that mysteriously never lasted through a whole month. I think I also paid an equipment rental fee on top of that.

I do not believe their claims that I indeed burned through 25 gigabits so quickly, even after I stopped streaming and turned off all automatic updates on my devices. The truth is that 25 gigabits will not last long with Exede.

In addition, Exede throttles your account after you “Exede” the limit to roughly 1-2 megabits/sec. That is in itself slower than as claimed but I found that when throttled, there is no ability to stream anything and no ability to send text messages.

Even when not throttled, it takes so long for the signal to go to and from the satellite (latency) that performance is extremely poor overall.

Customer Service was also extremely poor. The day after I signed up for Exede, they advertised a 6-month increase in the data allowance to 50 gigabits. Unbelievably, they refused to extend that promotion to me on my request.

When I terminated my service, the retention rep apologized, put me on hold, then told me I would be charged a $250 early termination fee and I would have to return my equipment, including a transceiver box that was professionally installed on my roof 12’ above ground level. If I wanted to have a professional come to remove it, I would be charged another $250.

Living in a rural area, I thought satellite was my only alternative from unreliable AT&T DSL. That was ultimately not the case. I found a local “last mile” or “cellular broadband” company that transmits from towers 4 miles away that produces reliable and reasonably fast speeds (10M/sec and minimal latency) over a wireless connection. Thus, they do not use cable, phone lines or optical between my home and their equipment. Plus, their service costs $59 per month rather than $129+. If you’re in an area not serviced by cable and are thinking about satellite, think again and be sure to look for a local cellular broadband service. I wish my installer gave me that advice 5 months ago when I got sold on a problematic satellite plan through Exede.

Almost got it

Jan 13, 2015 by mimi

Gotta congratulate exede for good marketing on tv. They almost had me. When I called to inquire about the service I was told the weather never affected the signal, but I suspect that's not true. Anyway, I went through a litany of questions about Internet usage and settled on 15GB per month. I asked and re-asked some questions and decided to try it. Then my brain started functioning again. I called them back and cancelled the installation appt. I had been shocked that anybody was still capping Internet usage in the home. And one of my questions was if Anyone in my house used the exede to get online via smartphone, it would count as part of my allotted data. Then there was the whole 2yr contract thing. It's like they're selling cellphone service for your home.
I did not experience problems with the sales call like others have and believe they were truthful in their answers to my queries except bad weather reception. As expected, they called me next day and I told them my concerns and that was that. Now I have time-Warner which has been good so far.
We all know how a person can end up with a huge cellphone bill and that's all this company is. Buyer beware!

So Frustrated

Jan 11, 2015 by Sarah

Last October I moved about 5 minutes away from where I was living. I assumed I could just transfer my internet, but a few days before I moved, I found out that I couldn't. The internet is unreliable. A few times a week, I am off line and I have to unplug and replug to get online again. Now I just got a message that I have used my internet usage for the month. It's only the 11th of the month! I have never seen this before. I had no idea that there was a limit. It says that if I don't buy more, my internet will be slow. It's already slow! I don't live in the country. I shouldn't have to be stuck with satellite internet in the first place! It doesn't make any sense to me.

Download and Upload speeds

Jan 10, 2015 by WillyMcDee

File Id ab

I have two questions for any Exede or Other Satellite Internet users.

What percentage of a DOWNLOAD SPEED and an UPLOAD SPEED would have to be maintained in any twenty-four hour continuous period to meet the Download Speed and Upload Speed given on Exede's Web site for a Class 10 Plan?

How much of that percentage would have to be maintained during working hours (Say 7am to 7pm Eastern Slandered Time) ?

I would appreciate any answer you could give.

Poor customer service

Jan 10, 2015 by Emilia

We moved to an area where exede is the only provider. After waiting 6 hrs for a technician and spending 2 hours on the phone with their customer service department, I decided to cancel. Granted, I have called the day before to confirm the appointment. They couldn't provide me with the tecchnician's information or even confirm that one was dispatched. Later, i got a hold of a local provider who swore he could got me hook up in two days. But while reading the reviews, I figure that it was better that no one showed up. Horrible, horrible customer service.

Don't get what you're told

Jan 09, 2015 by Kyle

Was told by DirecTV that I'd get the Freedom plan with 150GB but ended up getting 10GB, communications very unclear. Download speed was good but webpage loading extremely slow, not for people who want to surf websites as the service takes forever to load images. Recommend doing LTE instead if you're in range. Had to pay cancellation fee despite poor communication.

unable to connect

I was misled from the start regarding my ability to use this service for video conferencing and online gaming. The technician was 6 hours late to install (and only came after a second phone call from me). When I began to have problems, I had to call three times to get a tech to even call me back - and then he failed to show for the appointment. Now the company says I have to pay a disconnect fee for their useless service. DO NOT SIGN WITH THIS COMPANY!

considering using

Saw the Commercial and it sounded real good but I
Think I will invest in a hotspot instead. To many
dissatisfied customers. Bad service is not good
business. Will pass this on to all my rural friends.

Beware this company is a scam!

Signed up for the 15GB plan with 30GB promo for 6 months. A family of with 2 kids under 10 not using any video, we burn through 30gb in a month. Exede customer support is an embarrassment. Forget about talking to a supervisor/manager, they wont transfer you to one and they will tell you one will call you back, but they won't. After the promo period is over and you revert back to the basic plan, they do not offer a package similar (30GB or higher) to the promo package. This is a total scam to sucker people into getting a their service and then after they have you locked into a contract, you have to pay them to get out of it. Dirt bag rip off miserable customer service! Only get this service if you cant get anything else. Oh and the useless Exede customer representatives have been telling me from day one about the new freedom plan that is coming that offers 150gb a month. Of course this is bs and will never happen. Ive had multiple reps tell me that it would be available in a couple of months. Want to talk to a supervisor about it? Good luck with that!

Good Option

We live in the country so there are no other types of internet available. Cellular or satellite are our only options for internet. We have the unlimited web surfing with 5gb data for downloading package. We also have unlimited downloads between 3:00am and 8:00am. To stay within the data cap, we had to set our computers/devices so that they will not automatically download updates. We do all of our downloads during the free periods. We have a program (PlayLater) that allows us to record from Netflix and Hulu, which we also do during the free periods. The internet service is fast and reliable. We have not had a single issue with the service. Most of the complaints that I read about any of the satellite internet services are related to data caps. As long as you understand how data is used and manage it properly, Exede has a workable solution for many people.

1.2 5.0 1231 1231 having seriouse speed issues, complained to company they schedualed a technician to come gave a 3 hour window for the tech to be there, waited the 3 hours then called and they said Exede broadband internet
